About this practice

Write each mixed number as an improper fraction.

Each question gives a whole number and a fraction. Enter one fraction: the numerator and the denominator.

Keep the same denominator as the mixed number. A fraction with the same value over a different denominator is not accepted.

Typical level: Grade 4 and beyondStudents work with fractions greater than 1 and with mixed numbers in Grade 4. Curriculum timing varies.

Count all the pieces

Each whole is made of as many pieces as the denominator says. Count the pieces in the wholes, then add the pieces you already have.

2three fourths

= 2 × 4 = 8 fourths

Each whole is 4 fourths, so 2 wholes are 8 fourths.

= 8 fourths + 3 fourths = 11 fourths

The pieces are all fourths, so add them: 11 fourths in all.

= eleven fourths

11 fourths is 11/4. The denominator stays 4.

Keep the denominator you started with. 22 eighths is worth the same as eleven fourths, but here the answer uses the original denominator, 4.
