Fractions practice

Subtract fractions whose denominators differ.

About this practice

Subtract one fraction from a larger one with a different denominator.

Each question subtracts a smaller fraction from a larger one, both less than 1, with different denominators from 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12. The first fraction is always the larger. Enter the difference as one fraction.

Equivalent fractions are accepted, so an answer does not have to be in simplest form.

Typical level: Grade 5 and beyondStudents add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators in Grade 5. Curriculum timing varies.

Rewrite with a common denominator, then subtract

You can only take away pieces that are the same size as the ones you started with. Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator first.

two thirds − one fourth

= eight twelfths − three twelfths

Rewrite both over 12.

= five twelfths

Subtract the numerators and keep 12.

eight twelfths three twelfths
Both are counted in twelfths, so the pieces are the same size.
