About this practice

Put three fractions in order from least to greatest.

Each question gives you three different fractions that are less than 1, with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12. Some share a denominator or a numerator, some need rewriting, and some are close together.

Tap a fraction to place it in the next position, tap a placed fraction to take it back, then check your answer.

Typical level: Grade 4 and beyondOrdering builds on comparing two fractions at a time. Curriculum timing varies.

Rewrite the fractions with the same denominator

Once the pieces are the same size, compare the numerators. The fraction with the smallest numerator is least.

two thirds, three fourths, five sixths

= eight twelfths, nine twelfths, ten twelfths

Rewrite each one over 12: 2/3 = 8/12, 3/4 = 9/12, 5/6 = 10/12.

= 8 < 9 < 10

The pieces are all the same size, so compare the numerators.

= two thirds < three fourths < five sixths
eight twelfths nine twelfths ten twelfths
With same-size pieces, the longer the shaded part, the greater the fraction.

Sometimes you can compare directly: If the fractions already share a denominator or numerator, or you can easily compare each one with one half, you may not need to rewrite them first.
