About this practice

Choose the fraction that names the marked point.

Each number line runs from 0 to 1, cut into 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 equal spaces, with one point marked. The point is always between 0 and 1.

Some points have more than one name. If the point is 2 spaces from 0 on a line cut into fourths, it is 2/4, and it is also 1/2. Only one of those names will be among the four choices.

Typical level: Grade 3 and beyondStudents begin representing fractions on number lines in Grade 3. This practice extends that work across several different denominators. Curriculum timing varies.

Count the spaces, not the marks

The bottom number is how many equal spaces there are between 0 and 1. The top number is how many of those spaces the point is from 0.

1 2 3 4 0 1 3/4
4 equal spaces, 5 marks. The point is 3 spaces from 0, so it is 3/4.

Marks are not spaces: this line has 5 marks but only 4 spaces. Counting marks would give 4/5 instead of 3/4. Count the spaces between the marks.
