The denominator says how many equal groups to split the number into. The numerator says how many of those groups to take.
three fourths of 20
Split 20 into 4 equal groups. Each group is one fourth of 20, and it has 5 in it.
Take 3 of those groups: 3 fourths of 20 is 3 groups of 5.
When the numerator is 1, one group is the whole answer: 1/4 of 20 is just 5.
