About this practice

Add two fractions that have the same denominator.

Each question adds two fractions that are less than 1, with a denominator from 3 to 10. The sum can be less than 1, equal to 1, or more than 1, and you enter it as one fraction.

Equivalent fractions are accepted, so an answer does not have to be in simplest form.

Typical level: Grade 4 and beyondStudents add and subtract fractions with like denominators in Grade 4. Curriculum timing varies.

Same denominator, same-size pieces

The pieces are already the same size, so add the numerators and keep the denominator.

two sevenths + three sevenths = five sevenths

2 sevenths and 3 sevenths make 5 sevenths.

five eighths + seven eighths = twelve eighths

5 + 7 = 12, so the sum is 12 eighths. That is more than 1 whole, so the numerator is larger than the denominator. Enter it as a fraction.
